Daniel gets a paycheck every 4

  Daniel gets a paycheck every   4 4 4  weeks. He works  x x x  hours each week. How many hours does Daniel get paid for on each paycheck? Write your answer as an expression. 4 x Hint #1 1 / 3 Let's see what happens as the number of hours worked per week increases: Hours worked per week Hours paid for on each paycheck \blue{1} 1 start color #6495ed, 1, end color #6495ed 4 \cdot \blue{1} = 4 4 ⋅ 1 = 4 4, dot, start color #6495ed, 1, end color #6495ed, equals, 4 \blue{2} 2 start color #6495ed, 2, end color #6495ed 4 \cdot \blue{2} = 8 4 ⋅ 2 = 8 4, dot, start color #6495ed, 2, end color #6495ed, equals, 8 \blue{3} 3 start color #6495ed, 3, end color #6495ed 4 \cdot \blue{3} = 12 4 ⋅ 3 = 1 2 4, dot, start color #6495ed, 3, end color #6495ed, equals, 12 Hint #2 2 / 3 Hours worked per week Hours paid for on each paycheck \blue{x} x start color #6495ed, x, end color #6495ed 4 \cdot \blue{x} = 4x 4 ⋅ x = 4 x 4, dot, start color #6495ed, x, end color #6495ed, equals, 4, ...

Why do we have math if we can describe things in words?

Why do we have math if we can describe things in words? Algebraic expressions are useful because they represent the value of an expression for all of the values a variable can take on. Sometimes in math, we describe an expression with a phrase. For example, the phrase "two more than five" can be written as the expression 5+2 5 + 2 5, plus, 2 . Similarly, when we describe an expression in words that includes a variable, we're describing an algebraic expression, an expression with a variable. For example, "three more than  x x x " can be written as the algebraic expression x+ 3 x + 3 x, plus, 3 . But why? Why use math if we can describe things in words? One of the many reasons is that math is more precise and easier to work with than words are. This is a question you should keep thinking about as we dig deeper into algebra.
